Millions of Older Americans May Own an Overlooked Financial Asset

Most Americans understand the value of a home.

They understand retirement accounts, investment portfolios, and savings.

But few realize that under the right circumstances, an older life insurance policy may also represent a financial asset—one that could have value beyond its cash surrender value.

Every year, countless policy owners decide to surrender their coverage or allow it to lapse because premiums have become too expensive, their financial priorities have changed, or they believe the policy no longer serves its original purpose.

What many don't realize is that, depending on the policy and the insured's age and health, there may be another option worth exploring before making that decision.

For some seniors, an eligible life insurance policy may be sold through a regulated transaction known as a life settlement, potentially providing more value than surrendering the policy to the insurance company. Eligibility varies, and not every policy qualifies, but financial professionals often recommend understanding all available options before permanently giving up a policy.

Why This Conversation Is Becoming More Important

America is experiencing one of the largest retiree populations in history.

At the same time, many older adults are facing rising healthcare costs, inflation, longer life expectancies, and retirement income that must stretch further than originally planned.

These financial realities have caused many retirees to take a fresh look at assets they may have overlooked—including older life insurance policies that were purchased decades ago for needs that may no longer exist.

For some, children have grown and become financially independent.

Businesses have been sold.

Mortgages have been paid off.

Estate plans have changed.

Yet the policy often remains exactly where it has always been—without being reviewed to determine whether it still represents the best financial decision.

Did You Know?

Many permanent life insurance policies are surrendered or allowed to lapse each year because owners believe their only choices are to keep paying premiums or cancel the coverage.

Depending on eligibility, some policies may qualify for a life settlement through the regulated secondary market, giving owners another option to evaluate before surrendering coverage.

What Exactly Is a Life Settlement?

A life settlement is the sale of an existing life insurance policy to a licensed institutional buyer for an amount that is generally greater than the policy's cash surrender value but less than its death benefit.

After the transaction is completed, the purchaser becomes responsible for future premium payments and ultimately receives the policy's death benefit when the insured passes away.

Life settlements are regulated in most U.S. jurisdictions, and the transaction is not appropriate for every policy owner. Factors such as age, health, policy type, coverage amount, and premium costs all influence eligibility.

For many seniors, however, understanding whether a policy qualifies can be an important part of making an informed financial decision.

Four Common Reasons Seniors Explore a Life Settlement

Premiums Have Become Too Expensive

Maintaining coverage that once fit comfortably into a household budget may become more difficult during retirement.

The Original Need Has Changed

Many policies were purchased to protect young families, cover business obligations, or replace income. Years later, those original reasons may no longer exist.

Retirement Priorities Have Shifted

Some policy owners choose to explore whether an older policy could help support healthcare expenses, long-term care planning, retirement income, or other financial goals.

They Simply Want to Understand Their Options

Even if someone ultimately keeps their policy, many financial professionals believe understanding its current value is part of making an informed decision.

Before You Surrender a Policy, Consider Learning What It's Worth.

Many policy owners never ask whether their life insurance policy may have value beyond its cash surrender value.

A professional policy review can help determine whether a policy may qualify for a life settlement or whether another option may better fit your financial goals.

Learning your options doesn't obligate you to sell your policy. It simply helps ensure you're making an informed decision before taking an irreversible step.
